SAT Math 500–600 band

Locking down algebra and breaking into intermediate-difficulty items.

What's actually holding you back here

In the 500–600 band, you've mostly mastered the easy items but are still missing roughly half the medium items and almost all the hard ones. The fix is to push medium-item accuracy from ~50% to ~80%. That alone is worth 80–120 scaled points. Hard items can wait until the 600+ band.

The three highest-leverage topics for this band

  1. Passport to Advanced Math — Quadratics and exponentials are where the medium-item gains live.
  2. Problem Solving & Data Analysis — Statistics and scatterplot interpretation items are usually mid-difficulty and underdrilled.
  3. Heart of Algebra — Lock down systems and inequalities to bank reliable points.

The plan

Five-week plan: two weeks on Passport (quadratics, exponentials), one week on Problem Solving (statistics, scatterplots), one week on Heart of Algebra cleanup, one week on full-test pacing. Take a timed practice test at the end of each week. The 540 → 640 jump is the most common multi-month progress in this band.

What success looks like

Success looks like a 620 on the next practice test. From there, the next band-up plan kicks in.

What to skip

Skip complex numbers, the hardest Additional Topics items, and any single subtopic where you're below 30% — that subtopic needs a foundation review more than test-style drilling.
