SAT Math 700–800 band

Eliminating careless errors and mastering the hardest item types.

What's actually holding you back here

In the 700–800 band, content gaps are essentially zero. Missed points come from careless errors (sign slips, misread questions, computation mistakes on items you know how to do) and from one or two hard items per test that use a specific trick — often a clever algebraic substitution or a non-obvious geometric construction.

The three highest-leverage topics for this band

  1. Passport to Advanced Math — Where the trick items live. Drill the hardest 10 problems per subtopic.
  2. Additional Topics in Math — Trig identities and complex circle/sector items are the highest-band content.
  3. Problem Solving & Data Analysis — Two-way table interpretation traps and conditional probability items hurt 750+ students.

The plan

Three-week plan: one week of pure hard-item drilling on the three subtopics where your error rate is highest, one week of full-test pacing under realistic conditions with extra attention to error-cause logging, one week of light review and rest. Don't overtest in this band — it's the most common 760 → 740 trap.

What success looks like

Success looks like a 780 on the next practice test. The 780 → 800 last 20 points is mostly variance and luck — most 780 students score 800 on the real test about a third of the time.

What to skip

Skip any easy or medium subtopic. Skip new content categories — at this band you should be polishing, not learning.
